For Chinese listening practice, pick a short video where you can follow what happens at normal speed, even if you miss some words. The voices should be clear, and Chinese captions should help you check what you heard. Start with something you want to watch, then try the first 30 to 60 seconds to see how much you understand.

Watch the first minute

Play 30 to 60 seconds at normal speed without looking up words. When it ends, check these four things:

  1. Can you follow what happened? Try saying who’s speaking and what they’re doing. A rough answer is fine; you don’t need to translate every word.
  2. Can you hear the words clearly? You should be able to catch at least a few words or phrases. Loud music, people talking over each other, or sound effects can make a clip hard to study, even when you understand the scene.
  3. Are there Chinese captions? Look for captions you can read and compare with the speech. English subtitles help with the story, but they don’t show you which Chinese words the speaker used.
  4. Do you want to keep watching? If you’re already bored, choose another video. You’ll be listening to some of it more than once.

Here’s a made-up line you might hear as someone goes into a room:

你先进去，我马上就来。你先進去，我馬上就來。

Pronunciation and meaning

Nǐ xiān jìnqù, wǒ mǎshàng jiù lái.

“Go in first. I’ll be right there.”

You might miss 马上馬上 (mǎshàng, right away), but still understand that one person is going inside and the other will follow. You can make that guess from what’s happening on screen, then check the caption.

If you can’t tell who’s talking or why someone goes inside, try a shorter clip or a topic you know more about. If you understand nearly every line, you can just enjoy the video. You don’t have to study every clip you watch.

When to pause and study a clip

If you understand what’s happening but miss a few lines, replay a short part and check those lines. For example, you might understand that someone is cooking but miss the instruction about when to add an ingredient.

You can also enjoy a video that’s too fast or difficult to study right now. Follow what you can from the pictures and the words you recognize. If you want to come back to it later, save it. For focused listening practice, choose a clip you can understand with less help.

Replay the part you didn’t catch

  1. Watch the short part once without stopping, just to follow what happens.
  2. Replay it with Chinese captions. Check one or two lines you missed, and look up a word if it’s stopping you from understanding them.
  3. Play it again without pausing. See if you can hear the phrase you just checked when the speaker says the whole sentence.
